Notorious gangster Kumar Shrestha also known as Kumar Ghainte was shot dead in an encounter with police here in Kapurdhara, Samakhusi of Kathmandu on Thursday. A team from Metropolitan Crime Division, Teku, shot Ghaite and two of his friends during the encounter at Kapoor Dhara in Samakhusi today. Ghaite, shot at his midsection and thigh, later succumbed to his wounds at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj.Although police had placed Ghaite’s name in their list of most wanted criminals, Ghaite was close to the ruling Nepali Congress and had been openly running several businesses in Kathmandu. It is learned that Ghaite knew police were intending to kill him in an encounter and had even approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) fearing for his life. Last year, police had killed another gangster Dinesh ‘Chari’ in what was believed to be a well-designed fake encounter. Chari was close to the CPN (UML).

According to SSP Sarbendra Khanal, chief of Metropolitan City Police Crime Division (MPCD), Ghainte was killed in a crossfire between MPCD search team and his gang. Eight bullets were shot on Ghainte chest during encounter with Nepal Police. A Ghainte-led gang had first opened fire at MPCD team, which was following him in connection with his alleged involvement in extortion and criminal activities.


Nepali Gangster Kumar Shrestha alias Known as Kumar Ghainte was shot dead in an encounter with police here at Kapurdhara of Samakhusi in Kathmandu on Thursday. Three of accomplices of gangster Ghante have also been injured in the incident. They are undergoing treatment at Interim Care Unit of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj. Following the incident, relatives of gangster Ghante and leaders of Nepali Congress including Lawmaker Jagadish Narsingh KC have reached the hospital. Speaking to the journalists, lawmaker KC accused police of violating human rights in the encounter with gangster Ghainte. KC maintained that this is an incident perpetrated with a motive of political revenge as Ghainte was associated with NC of late. Meanwhile, three police officers have been also injured in the incident. They are undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital.
